WHY waS THIS RACE IMPORTANT?

All 100 seats in the Virginia House of Delegates were up for election in 2017. Republicans held 66 of the 100 seats. In 2015, only 21 Democrats ran against GOP lawmakers. In 2017, Democrats challenged 45 GOP incumbents—including 17 lawmakers whose districts voted for Democrat Hillary Clinton in 2016.

HISTORY OF THE SEAT

Virginia’s 2nd state House District, which is represented by Republican Mark Dudenhefer, voted for Hillary Clinton for a 54% majority, making it one of 17 seats in the chamber (out of 100 total) that’s held by the GOP but was carried by Clinton. The last democrat who campaigned for the delegate position, Josh King, received 49.46% of the vote.
